Hello, I'm Ed.
I'm a Senior Backend & Cloud Engineer with more than 18 years of experience designing and building scalable, production-grade systems.
I've worked across fintech, payment gateways, cybersecurity, billing, tolling, and e-commerce, building systems where reliability, performance, security, and maintainability matter.
My core expertise is in Java, Spring Boot, and AWS, with a strong focus on backend architecture, microservices, distributed systems, and event-driven architectures.
Over the years, my work has grown beyond implementing features. A large part of what I do today involves translating business requirements into technical solutions, making architecture decisions, solving difficult production problems, and helping teams build systems that can evolve without becoming increasingly difficult to understand and support.
What I Do
I design and build backend systems that are meant to last — systems that can handle real-world complexity while remaining understandable and maintainable over time.
My work typically involves:
- Designing backend and distributed system architectures
- Building Java and Spring Boot applications
- Designing microservices and service integrations
- Building cloud-native systems on AWS
- Implementing event-driven architectures using Kafka
- Designing APIs and integration patterns
- Working with security and identity platforms such as OAuth and Keycloak
- Improving production reliability, observability, and supportability
I particularly enjoy engineering problems where technical decisions have long-term consequences — architecture, scalability, reliability, data consistency, integrations, and failure handling.
Building NERV
I'm also the creator and maintainer of NERV, an open-source Java ecosystem built around problems I've encountered while developing and supporting production systems.
NERV includes libraries for areas such as event reliability, auditing, exception handling, and persistence. The goal is to turn proven engineering patterns into reusable tools that are practical for real Spring applications.
Building NERV also gives me a place to explore architecture and library design outside the constraints of a single project, and to share those ideas with other Java developers.

I started CzetsuyaTech as a place to document what I was learning and working on. Over the years, it has grown into a collection of tutorials, engineering notes, architecture discussions, and lessons from real development work.
Today, I write primarily about:

How I Approach Engineering
I believe good systems aren't simply functional. They should also be understandable, maintainable, observable, and resilient.
My approach is grounded in:
- Clarity over unnecessary complexity
- Practical solutions over theoretical perfection
- Explicit failure handling instead of hidden behavior
- Designing for production and support, not only development
- Balancing business needs with long-term technical quality
I like systems where state can be inspected, failures can be understood, and another engineer can determine what happened without having to reverse engineer the entire application.
